Der Bremer Codex mit der Signatur msb 0023, in den ersten Jahrzehnten des 14. Jahrhunderts wahrscheinlich in Konstantinopel entstanden, entstammt nach Inhalt und Anlage dem Bereich des höheren byzantinischen Schulbetriebs. Er enthält u.a. die „byzantinische Trias“ der Tragödien des Sophokles (Aiax, Electra, Oedipus Rex) mit Moschopulos- und Planudes-Randscholien, Kleomedes' Schrift De motu circulari corporum coelestium, Ailios Aristeides' De rhetorica, das erste Buch von Xenophons Institutio Cyri, Demosthenes' Orationes Philippicae und Olynthiacae sowie die Characteres Epistolici des Ps.-Libanios. Um diese Kernstücke gruppieren (...) sich noch Auszüge aus einem juristischen Lexikon, aus Xenophons Hellenica und wiederum der Institutio Cyri, aus Demetrios von Phaleron und Proklos über Briefformulare sowie aus Symeon Seths Conspectus rerum naturalium. Mit Konjekturen und vermeintlich notwendigen Ergänzungen in byzantinischen Texten kann man nicht vorsichtig genug sein, wie folgende Beispiele zeigen.

Es handelt sich um die zweite (unveränderte) Auflage der zuerst im Jahr 1996 erschienenen Übersetzung der Alexias Anna Komnenes von Diether Roderich Reinsch, der ersten Übersetzung überhaupt des vollen Werkes ins Deutsche.

Die Alexias Anna Komnenes ist eine sehr wichtige und interessante historische Quelle für die Zeit um die Wende vom 11. zum 12. Jh. Bereits im J. 1970 bezüglich des 15. Buches und im J. 1990 bezüglich der Bücher 1–14 der Alexias wurde von A. Kambylis und D. R. Reinsch entsprechend festgestellt, daß die bis zu jenem Zeitpunkt erschienenen Ausgaben einschließlich der von B. Leib (1937 (1967), 1943 (1967), 1945) verbesserungsbedürftig waren. So wurde der Plan zu einer neuen kritischen Ausgabe (...) der ganzen Alexias auf der Basis einer erneuten Kollation der Hss. und eines gesicherten Stemmas gefaßt. Durch das vorliegende Werk, das unter Mitwirkung von D. R. Reinsch und A. Kambylis entstanden ist (wobei D. R. Reinsch für die Bücher 1–14, A. Kambylis für Buch 15 verantwortlich ist), wurde dieser Plan auf beste Weise erfüllt: Nicht nur wurden die Hss. gründlich (neu) kollationiert, wodurch viele Verlesungen der älteren Ausgaben, insbesondere der von Leib, ans Licht gekommen sind und beseitigt werden konnten; darüberhinaus wurde ein (bisher fehlendes) sicheres und klares Stemma erstellt, welches wiederum zu einer Neubewertung der Hss. als Textzeugen führte. Demnach wurde mehr Wert auf die Hs. F gelegt, die nunmehr meistens als Basis der Textkonstitution zugrundegelegt worden ist, während die Hss. C und V um eine Stufe tiefer (als bisher) gestellt wurden. Auch haben die neuen Herausgeber viele Konjekturen älterer Editoren, hauptsächlich Reifferscheids, als erfolgreich bzw. fruchtbar anerkannt und beibehalten, während sie andere Eingriffe in den Text mit Recht rückgängig gemacht haben. Reinsch und Kambylis sind bei der Textherstellung insgesamt behutsam vorgegangen, d.h. sie haben sich davor gehütet, in den überlieferten Text einzugreifen, wenn er vertretbar schien. Wenn es hingegen notwendig war, haben sie glänzende Konjekturen erbracht. Insbesondere fällt hier die Leistung von Kambylis auf bei der Wiederherstellung des stark beeinträchtigten letzten Teils des 15. Buches, der nunmehr nahezu vollständig wiederhergestellt worden ist. A simple mathematical extension of quantum theory is presented. As well as opening the possibility of alternative methods of calculation, the additional formalism implies a new physical interpretation of the standard theory by providing a picture of an external reality. The new formalism, developed first for the single-particle case, has the advantage of generalizing immediately to quantum field theory and to the description of relativistic phenomena such as particle creation and annihilation.

Responsibility is often thought of as primarily a legal concept. Even when it is moral responsibility that is at issue, it is assumed that it is above all in moralities based on law-centered patterns and models that responsibility takes center stage, so that responsibility is a legal concept at its core, and is applicable to the realm of private morality only by extension and analogy.

This paper examines women’s experiences with decision-making about non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT). Such tests offer knowledge about chromosomal disorders early in pregnancy, without the risk of miscarriage associated with invasive procedures such as amniocentesis. Based on qualitative interviews with women in Germany who used, or declined, NIPT, we show how some women, who would not consider amniocentesis due to the risk of miscarriage, welcome the knowledge provided by, and the additional agency resulting from, NIPT. For others, declining the offer to (...) “know more” becomes increasingly difficult to articulate. The absence of risk strips women of a “good reason” to justify their decision not to test, thus implicitly challenging their “right not to know.” Moreover, NIPT heightens moral dilemmas within relationships with partners, existing children, and sometimes other close relatives. While clinically “non-invasive,” we argue that NIPT changes decision-making in an ethically and socially highly significant way. (shrink)

James Stacey Taylor, in his book Markets With Limits, argues that Jason Brennan and Peter Jaworski, in their book Markets Without Limits, systematically mischaracterize the views of the anti-commodification theorists they are critiquing, attributing to them positions (e.g., semiotic essentialism and an asymmetry thesis) that they do not hold. Further, Taylor offers an anti-commodification hypothesis of his own to explain why talented academics like Brennan and Jaworski could fall into such systematic mistakes – namely, that the intrusion of market norms (...) into academia incentivizes scholars to prioritize original arguments in prominent venues over careful fact-checking. I argue that Taylor is correct in charging that Brennan and Jaworski have gotten their opponents’ views wrong; and I show how their subsequent replies to Taylor’s criticisms have been unconvincing. I also argue, however, that Taylor may be over-hasty in identifying the likely causes of their errors. (shrink)

Roderick Firth's writings on epistemology amount to an exceptionally careful and cogent defense of an account of perceptual knowledge in the tradition Firth called 'radical empiricism.' This important book collects all of Firth's major works on epistemology; it also contains his only publication in ethics, the extremely influential essay on 'Ethical Absolutism and the Ideal Observer.' In addition, the book includes a number of important previously unpublished essays. Together, these writings constitute the most finished and compelling version of traditional (...) empiricist epistemology. Libertarianism needs a theory of class. This claim may meet with resistance among some libertarians. A few will say: “The analysis of society in terms of classes and class struggles is a specifically Marxist approach, resting on assumptions that libertarians reject. Why should we care about class?” A greater number will say: “We recognize that class theory is important, but libertarianism doesn't need such a theory, because it already has a perfectly good one.”.

Zusammenfassung Childs’ Rekonstruktion der Genealogien wird bestätigt: Der Pfeiler ist wahrscheinlich von Cherẽi und nicht von Cheriga errichtet worden. Die am Ende der Südseite erwähnten Schlachten fanden wahrscheinlich nicht später als 428 v. Chr. statt. Die auf der Ostseite erwähnten Aktionen sind wahrscheinlich nicht später als 424 v. Chr., weil Ertaχssiraza unmittelbar vor einer Aktion des Dynasten Teϑϑiweibi erwähnt wird und daher mit Artaxerxes I. gleichzusetzen ist. In einer zuvor berichteten militärischen Aktion erscheinen Miϑrapata, Aruwãtijesi und die „Triere des Cherẽi“. (...) Am Beginn der Nordseite gibt es einen Sprung bis wahrscheinlich 412/411 v. Chr., als der Satrap Tissaphernes in Kaunos tätig war. Am Ende des Prosatextes ist wahrscheinlich in ]welẽ der Name des Dynasten Ddenewele zu sehen, als „sein Sohn“, d. h. Cherẽis Sohn und Nachfolger. Die griechischen Verse danach rühmen den Sohn des Harpagos, und sein Name sollte nach dem Καρικα γένος zu [Καρ.]ις ergänzt werden, nicht zu [Γεργ]ις. Die ihm zugeschriebene Tötung von sieben arkadischen Hopliten an einem Tag erklärt die sonst kryptische Zahl CII im Feldzug gegen Tlos. Die anschließenden B-lykischen Verse gelten aber Cheriga, und das Nordgedicht mag zu seinen Lebzeiten gedichtet worden sein, weil er hier handelnd auftritt. Der einzige chronologische Fixpunkt ist die Schlacht an der Mykale 428 v. Chr., von der auf der Südseite berichtet wird. Im Westgedicht tritt eine Frau namens Muni an die Stelle des Cheriga, und das könnte seine Frau sein, die nach dem Tod des Cherẽi die Herrschaft übernommen haben könnte. Dieses Bild von der Pfeiler-Chronologie ist vereinbar mit Müselers Chronologie der dynastischen Münzen mit den Namen von Cheriga, Teϑϑiweibi, Cherẽi und Ddenewele. Allerdings können im Rahmen dieses Konzepts andere auf dem Pfeiler vorkommende Dynasten wie Trbbẽnimi, Miϑrapata und Aruwãtijesi nicht mit den gleichnamigen Münzprägern identisch sein, mit der möglichen Ausnahme des Punamuwa. Außerdem ist der Cheriga der Münzen zwar sicher mit dem Cheriga auf dem Pfeiler identisch, aber offenbar nicht mit Cheriga, dem Vater des Erbbina in den Letoon-Inschriften. Doch der Dynast Waχssepddimi auf dem Pfeiler ist möglichwerweise identisch mit dem älteren der beiden Weχssere genannten Dynasten, der im Xanthostal unmittelbar nach der Herrschaft des Kuprlli Münzen prägte. Franz Brentano developed an original theory of intrinsic value which he attempted to base on his philosophical psychology. Roderick Chisholm presents here a critical exposition of this theory and its place in Brentano's general philosophical system. He gives a detailed account of Brentano's ontology, showing how Brentano tried to secure objectivity for ethics not through a theory of practical reason, but through his theory of the intentional objects of emotions and desires. Professor Chisholm goes on to develop certain suggestions (...) about intrinsic value made by Brentano and his students, and discusses their relevance to theodicy and the problem of evil. Brentano, as the teacher of Husserl, Meinong, Twardowski, and others, stands at the origin of the phenomenological tradition and of the Polish school of philosophy that developed after World War I. He has also had considerable influence on Anglo-American philosophy. This book will interest those concerned with the origins of phenomenological value theory and more generally with the connections between ethics and philosophical psychology. (shrink)

We first introduce the intuitive idea of a relation of grounding between facts . Then we propose a definition of this idea, based on a certain theory of the structure of facts . Finally we consider the idea of proofs of a special kind, namely proofs which follow the grounds of what is proved.

A Lagrangian formulation is constructed for particle interpretations of quantum mechanics, a well-known example of such an interpretation being the Bohm model. The advantages of such a description are that the equations for particle motion, field evolution and conservation laws can all be deduced from a single Lagrangian density expression. The formalism presented is Lorentz invariant. This paper follows on from a previous one which was limited to the single-particle case. The present paper treats the more general case of many (...) particles in an entangled state. It is found that describing more than one particle while maintaining a relativistic description requires the specification of final boundary conditions as well as the usual initial ones, with the experimenter’s controllable choice of the final conditions thereby exerting a backwards-in-time influence. This retrocausality then allows an important theoretical step forward to be made, namely that it becomes possible to dispense with the usual, many-dimensional description in configuration space and instead revert to a description in space–time using separate, single-particle wavefunctions. It may be seen, then, that if one was prepared to accept the existence of insulating sheaths on the nerves, all the arguments raised against the proposed identification of the nervous and electrical fluids, except one, could be answered satisfactorily. The single exception involved the question of how an electrical disturbance in the brain could be confined to a single nerve, and, as was indicated earlier, it was scarcely fair to hold this sort of objection against the electrical theory alone. (...) In that case, there remained no convincing argument to show why one should not accept the identification of the two fluids. On the other hand, of course, it remained an open question as to whether there was any convincing argument to show why one should accept the identification either. In this article, I draw on historical and conceptual arguments to show, first, that disenchantment and the influential view of the relationship between science and religion to which disenchantment gives rise are rooted in the metaphysics of theism. I then introduce the alternative metaphysical position of panentheism and identify Jungian psychology as an important, if implicit, mid-twentieth-century instance of panentheistic thought. Using the example of Jungian psychology, I demonstrate how the viewpoint of panentheism undoes the implications of disenchantment for the (...) relationship between science and religion, promoting greater opportunities for dialogue and reconciliation between science and religion. I note, however, that these closer relations may depend on understanding science and religion differently from how they are understood under disenchantment. While the original tension between science and religion is eased, another tension—between panentheistic and disenchanted understandings of science and religion—is exposed. I conclude by reflecting on some implications of this discussion for sociology. (shrink)

Now, happily, disavowed by most nations under the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention, the presumption is that any future deployment would be at the hands of rogue states, criminal gangs or perhaps terrorist organisations, to whom they could appeal because of their apparent ease of preparation and dissemination coupled with their sinister reputation and potential for causing mass casualties.But Herbert's villain is different. He is a trained scientist possessing expert skills and with access to pathogens, reagents and cutting-edge technology. Such a person might appear outwardly to be part of the conventional academic establishment except that their motives impel them to act covertly outside the accepted ethical and legal boundaries of their profession. Such ‘outsiders’ evade detection because they act alone and can, through their privileged position, anticipate and thwart regulation or investigation. But is this frightening scenario more than just a plot for apocalyptic novels? Is it a credible threat?In reality, such occurrences seem to be rare. In a comprehensive analysis of 180 incidents involving the use of biological agents during the last century, for instance, Carus2 noted that none of the confirmed bioterrorist attacks by non-state actors …. We build on the work of Moore and Gino (2015) and of Rest (1983, 1986) to develop the Ethical Guardrails Model (EGM). The EGM shows students how personal behaviors, relationships, and habits can help them to avoid ethical mistakes in the workplace. The EGM illustrates the components of ethical business behavior, incorporates a new deliberative component, specifies five ways in which ethical behavior may become derailed, and describes practices that can help a person to avoid derailment. We also describe our (...) use of the EGM in the business ethics classroom, an experience that has changed our approach to teaching business ethics. (shrink)
